At a party once, someone asked me what I did. I’d just been fired and had no idea what I was doing next or what role I’d play. Off the cuff, I said, “I’m between business cards.” They laughed. So did I. And somewhere in that awkward chuckle lay the understanding that maybe that’s where many of us stand. Between.

For the record, I’m a woman with a couple of degrees (M.D., MBA), a reliable supply of hot flashes, and a deep commitment to self-deprecation. I spent years as a hospice doctor — a strange and beautiful workshop on what really matters.

I’m not here to diagnose anything or offer advice; like a physician, I’m here to observe.

These days I’m blessed to share my space with a devoted partner. And dolphins, osprey and sea turtles on the island on which we live.

My writing takes you to an outlaw’s headstone in the Arizona desert, a baby wren rescued from its own exuberance, a stolen kiss in a basement during junior high.

Ordinary things that turn out to be something larger if we sit with them long enough: kindness, grit, showing up, being seen.

Short stories, small truths, and hopefully, for the reader, a quiet aha.

Like you, I’m still figuring it out. One foot stuck in the sand and the other searching for solid ground.
